Vinnitsa is a town in west central Ukraine, capital of Vinnytsya Oblast, on the Southern Bug River. It is an important railroad junction located in an agricultural region. The industries of Vinnitsa include food processing, especially beet sugar refining, and the manufacture of machinery, fertilizer, and clothing. The first mention refers to 1363 when it was a Lithuanian fortress. The name is connected with Old Russian word "vino" (wine) - ransom, dowry. It was taken by Poland in 1569 and was annexed by Russia in 1793. During World War II Vinnitsa was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1944. In 1640 Vladyslav IV granted an emblem - two sabers and a hook. Today the population of Vinnitsa is approximately 389,000.
